Topic: My Diplomatic Mission to Poland & Lithuania: It’s Complicated
Thirty-five years after the end of Soviet occupation in the region, Eastern Europe is once again bracing for … who knows? In July, I had the privilege of visiting with the US diplomatic corps, MPs in Lithuania and the highest level of officials in Poland on a mission with the American Jewish Committee. We met with journalists and scholars and visited memorials to one of the worst atrocities in human history. While my visit was focused on Jewish issues, a long history of occupation, war and hardship haunts the region to this day and goes well beyond World War II. We met wonderful people, doing the hard work of maintaining democracy in a volatile region. Looking forward to sharing a different perspective on the world.
